On May 20, 2024, the Bureau of Industry and Security within the U.S. Department of Commerce published the long-awaited revisions to its exclusions process just posted in the federal register (read the published version HERE). Specifically, effective July 1, 2024, Commerce will remove six of the General Approved Exclusions on aluminum. The aluminum GAEs to be removed are the following and include some products of likely interest to the AEC:
- GAE.1.A: HTS 7609000000 (Aluminum tube or pipe fittings (for example, couplings, elbows, sleeves);
- GAE.4.A: HTS 7604210010 (Hollow profiles of aluminum alloy);
- GAE.5.A: HTS 7604291010 (Certain profiles of heat-treatable industrial aluminum alloys);
- GAE 9: HTS 7601209080 (Certain aluminum sheet ingot (slab));
- GAE.10.A: HTS 7607116010 (Boxed aluminum foil weighing not more than 11.3 kg of a thickness exceeding 0.1 mm); and

Over the next several weeks the AEC will be working with membership and our legal counsel to determine the best process for working with the BISon any exclusion requests filed July 1, 2024 or after.
